In Which Jack Grows Some Balls!
Thursday, April 02, 2009 at 01:29pm by Maggie
This episode centres around Kate’s reasons for returning to the island and how Ben becomes an Other.
JIn brings Ben back to the Dharma compound and Juliet does her best to save his life. Horace is running around trying to figure out how Sayid escaped, while Sawyer has Miles keep Jack, Hurley and Kate locked up in one of the cottages so they can’t say the wrong thing to Horace and cause more problems. To pass the time, Miles and Hurley argue about time travel and its effects on the events at hand.
Juliet realizes she doesn’t have the expertise to save Ben. Kate asks Jack to help, and he flat out refuses. He says he saved Ben’s life once before, under duress, that he did it for Kate, and that he’s not going to do it again. Kate says she liked him better before; Jack says she never liked him.
Later on, Juliet has a private word for Jack and she yells at him for not helping her with the surgery. She demands to know why he’s returned to the island because she doesn’t need any saving. He tells her he’s come back because he had to, only he doesn’t know why just yet.
Back at the infirmary, Kate offers to give blood to help Ben. Ben’s father comes in and seems to realize what a horrible man he’s been to his own son now that Ben is on his death bed. Shortly afterward Ben enters a crisis and Juliet knows she can’t save him. She suggests that perhaps Richard can, so Kate risks her life to take him to Richard. Sawyer follows shortly afterward, tells her he’s there to help, and that he’s doing it for Juliet. Together they find the Others and are led to Richard.
Richard says he can help and warns them that if he does, Ben must remain with them and his innocence will be lost. Kate and Sawyer understand and give Ben to Richard, and go back to Dharma.
Before coming back to the island, Kate fulfills an obligation to Sawyer; he’d asked her before he jumped out of the helicopter to take care of his daughter. Kate ends up forging a real friendship with Sawyer’s ex, and through this friendship she realizes that she must share Aaron with his real family and tells Claire’s mother about him. She explains that she will be returning to the island to find Claire, and that she’s explained to Aaron that his grandmother will be looking after him now.

It really aggravated me that there was no mention of the huge coincidence that Sawyer’s ex is also Kate’s friend. Something that big and we don’t get to see any reaction to it? That really irritated me.
Also interesting that Sayid attempts to kill Ben to prevent him from becoming the monster that he is today, and through that attempt ensures that Ben becomes the monster he is today.

I agree, about the lack of reaction between Kate and her friend.
I’m also annoyed about Sayid’s lack of success at killing Ben. I mean, isn’t that what this guy pretty much does for a living?

Well, whatever happened, happened, right? Ben was still alive in present-day, so there was no way he was going to die.
What would have happened if Sayid had cut off his head, I wonder?

I’m not annoyed by it in the sense that Ben isn’t dead, rather that Sayid’s character is very thorough yet he just failed this time. It’s nitpicky and I know I’m wanking.
So…what happens to make the island a place of healing, and is it that same event/phenomenon that causes the island to become hostile to a successful birth?

The island doesn’t heal everyone, though. It didn’t heal Ethan, or Shannon, or Boone or all the other people that died throughout the few seasons. So does it only heal people who have been exposed to Jacob?
I didn’t realize I missed Locke until I saw him for the first time in a month! The look on Ben’s face was priceless. How did he not know that would happen?

If Sayid had cut off Ben’s head as a child, I imagine Ben would have found a way to be walking around carrying his head in the current day!
I was very confused about the whole Kate/Sawyer’s ex thing. I fast fowarded through the previouslies last night, so I was wondering if I had forgotten some prior explanation of that relationship but I guess not.
And I was surprised that Ben appeared to be shocked at seeing Locke at the end of last night’s episode. I would have thought Ben expected Locke to come back to life, knowing the island’s powers. Maybe I’m misreading his expression, or over-estimating his knowledge of the island.
I loved the scenes between Hurley and Miles.

FG – Great minds…!!

GRRR RAWR! I would have totally mentioned any scene between Ben and Locke if I HAD SEEN ONE. Our channel cut it off too soon, and I had no idea we’d missed anything until this very second. Damn! Damn the man!

Oh, rats. Yeah, they just showed Ben waking up in the infirmary post-plane crash, to see Locke sitting next to his bed. Locke smiles and says, “Welcome back to the land of the living,” and Ben looks like he’s going to piss himself.

I think it’s funny that I went with “What Happened Happened” as my post title a few weeks ago, and it ended up actually being the title of this week’s episode. That should thoroughly confuse the hell out of the search engines for years to come.

GB maybe you already were living in the future, or your past is today’s present. or something…

GB…..I couldn’t figure out where I had heard that title before. When I checked the info on my DVR it said What happened, happened….I thought oh shit, it’s a repeat.
Thank god it wasn’t…..I am glad they are finally showing some episodes where we get answers rather then more questions….

Kate befriended Sawyer’s ex in a previous episode.
from Lostpedia:
“After her relationship with Sawyer ended, Cassidy set out on the road. While in Iowa, she tried to con people using the techniques she had been taught by Sawyer. Unfortunately, she was not as successful as she hoped. When a man she was trying to con at a service station threatened to call the police, a young lady stepped forward and pretended to buy her fake jewelry to help her out. The woman turned out to be Kate. The two got together for drinks at a local bar where Cassidy promised to help Kate talk to her mother, Diane. “

Genevieve, Freakgirl and I were aware of that. The point FG was making is that at some point, Kate should have had an, “Oh my god, Sawyer and I know the same person!” moment, and we never got to see that. Realistically, she should have had that moment when Sawyer whispered into her ear on the helicopter. Or the very least, when the two women were reunited, one of them should have said, “How weird is it that we both know Sawyer?”

Yes.

FG & GB – sorry, I misunderstood
PSA – On the podcast this week they said the next ep will go to 10:02, so make sure your Tivo is set for the extra 2 minutes.

No problem. I was having a hard time explaining my annoyance.
Thanks for the heads-up on the extended episode time!
