Monkey See, Monkey Do

This week’s episode of The Amazing Race was better than last week’s, for sure.
Unfortunately, one team made a heartbreaking, terrible error and lost a passport. So we say goodbye to Zev & Justin, while Lance & Keri continue to pollute my television screen. Also, Maria & Tiffany sure have luck on their side. An aside about them — I know they’re billed as poker players, but are they also a couple? Just wondering, as they seem to often call each other “babe” and other affectionate monikers. NOT THAT THERE’S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I know these shows seem to think they can only showcase one gay couple at a time, otherwise the world will apparently collapse under the weight of all the homos.
Anyhoo.
Our teams went to Cambodia this week. We found out that Jackie Kennedy Onassis isn’t recognizable to today’s youth (except for Zev, thank you). That the word “job” isn’t the same as “assignment.” That if I ever go to Cambodia, I’m hiring Thierry the cabbie as my personal tour guide/best friend. That it’s difficult to navigate a balance beam while wearing a monkey mask. That Lance likes to kick the air and frighten my dear, sweet Phil.
AND THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR PASSPORT ANYWHERE BUT DUCT TAPED TO YOUR BODY.

I’ve thought Tiffany and Maria might be a couple since the first episode. Or Tiffany is actually a man, you know, the type that says “babe! BABE!” repeatedly on TAR.

Also, Zev’s passport ended up somewhere near the Monkey Roadblock:

How nice was that Justin? He seems like an excellent friend. Our son has autism and maybe it’s dumb, but I am really heartened when I see such a great friendship between two people, one of whom happens to have Asperger’s. I’m sorry to see them go. Also, I have zero powers of observation anymore, it never occurred to me about Tiffany and Maria, but I suppose they could be a couple. How lame, though, if they are and AR can’t discuss it. LAME.

Last season, Luke had mentioned in an interview that he was gay, as well as one of the sisters, but the show only used Mike White & his dad for the “gay storyline” that season.
I guess in a bizarre way, it’s kind of progress? That Luke’s sexuality was considered boring compared to his hearing impairment? I don’t know.

How many Sean Penh, Cambodia type lines will we never get to hear due to the passport thing? Really too bad. I was hoping they’d get to stay in first and then have until the next departure time to find the passport.

My 10-year-old son, on Lance: “Mom, I know I’m not supposed to say this, but that guy is kind of a jerk, don’t you think?”
As for the poker players, the kids and I just assumed that they were a couple. Was that never stated? The just seem more like a couple than like buddies.

They were introduced to us as “friends,” not “dating,” so I guess not? I don’t know. They do seem like a couple. I guess we’ll find out after the Race.
Also, your son is wise.
