Open thread to discuss the Survivor finale.

And congratulations to B-Side for getting a sort of shout-out from Sugar during the reunion! I was HOWLING.

So is Corrine trying to build a “character” or something? What is that woman’s damage? Probst gave her a chance to apologize and she didn’t at all. The guy who eventually lands her is a lucky, lucky man, let me tell you.

Mrs. Papecuts and I both shouted “B-SIDE!” When Sugar mentioned that. And she may not have won a million bucks, but she sure looked like a million bucks at the finale. Yow.

I feel really really sorry for Randy.

Corrine is totally trying to build a character and I was completely disappointed in Jeff for even giving her a platform. If you haven’t, read this interview Andy from Reality Blurred did with her. Her soul is black and she’s the furthest thing from entertaining.

The part where she brags about knowingly selling drugs that she knew were dangerous is particularly foul.

I read that earlier this morning and was just aghast. I mean aside from the fact that I seriously doubt she (as a sales rep) REALLY knew Vioxx was dangerous, bragging about causing people pain and suffering for “comedic effect” is just classy.

But I guess that’s our fault for “not getting it” and being “nice people.”

I thought it an odd comment when she remarked upon casting Bob’s vote that he did good in the game but good luck in the real world. Uhm… seems to me he’s doing pretty ok for himself. Loving family, job he enjoys and is good at…. I dunno, seems pretty aces to me.

Also (last comment for awhile, I swear) what was with the crazy the first woman voted out (can’t remember her name) brought? Not only did she not answer Jeff’s question about Kenny her bizarre answer wasn’t even funny and seemed out of nowhere. I guess maybe she had come up with that line before the show started and was set on using it if she got a chance to speak?

What was with Marcus’s questions to the jury? What was he getting at with Susie? I was really confused by him.

Also, seems to me like Bob doesn’t even like Sugar, which makes me sad.

You never know with these shows. How can Evil Dick win BB and Sugar doesn’t even get a vote? Bizarre.

Marcus is a big baby who can’t stand to lose. Watch the Ponderosa episodes and you’ll see. He and Corrine refused to talk to Crystal or Kenny and pressured Charlie into not talking to them either.

All due respect to B-Side and his shout-out, isn’t it kind of weird that THIS is what Jeff chose to ask Sugar about? She held an immunity idol through most of the game, orchestrated a couple of blindsides, and was single-handedly responsible for giving Bob the second chance he needed to stay in — and win — the game. But instead of asking about any of that, he asked her the tired old, “So do people recognize you in public?” question. I guess it’s true that he really didn’t like her.

Yeah, I like Jeff Probst, but sometimes he’s pretty obvious about who he likes and doesn’t like.

Also, I thought Sugar was kind of ugh while she responded to that question. As if the paparazzi are following her every move. Spare us.

I can’t believe that Randy was doing anything other than putting on an act with that misanthropy stuff.

I too was confused by Marcus, but he cleaned up nice.

I liked Charlie’s question for Bob.

Yeah, anything I’ve seen/read from Marcus since he was booted seemed really snotty. I would bet my house that Corinne had no clue how dangerous Vioxx is/was. Randy’s a douche. Generally I don’t mind Probst, but I think he’s been getting worse and worse as a host for the last 3-4 years.

How shocked am I that aside from Bob the only one I think I could stand being around is Matty? I never would have thought so in the beginning, but he seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

Not that it would have helped her, but Susie should have definitely played up the fact that it was her vote for Marcus that changed the game.

I don’t even know what to say about Corinne or Randy. Corinne seemed disappointed that her disgusting nature wasn’t more loveable, and Randy was dismayed that his disgusting nature turned him into a big joke. I was particularly amused when Sugar reiterated her opinion that he was a jerk during tribal council; here is a man who has many times stated that he hates everyone, doesn’t care what people think and refuses to be nice to anyone, yet he is incensed when Sugar calls him a jerk and refuses to kiss his ass for a million dollars. I think both Randy and Corinne are equally foul.

Marcus is kind of an ass, too. I have no idea why he thinks that Susie’s decision to save herself invalidates her roles as mother and teacher. Ken did the same thing with Bob and his “broken word.” “You’re a bad person because you didn’t let me win.” I mean, do these people really believe that?

I’m still in shock that I got the shout out!

I’m surprised Susie never approached Matty and Bob about the option of voting for Sugar. She knew she couldn’t win against either of them (and I don’t think anybody guessed – least of all Jeff – that she’d get 3 votes) but there was the never-considered option she could split their vote. Maybe the general dislike of Sugar was much bigger than we saw and taking her to the final a no-brainer.

And what about those 3 votes? In the past Survivors have generally been awarded in the end for “playing the best game”. Not so much this time. Of course all three of them could be labeled “coat-tail riders” so maybe the question is moot. I don’t remember a single season of Survivor – except maybe for the first one – where so many arbitrary, minor actions had such a big impact: Charlie noticing the immunity idol and inciting the wrath of Ken, Randy and the cookie incident, Bob taking part in the humiliation of Randy – while almost costing him Randy’s vote – probably played a big part in Sugar’s last decision to vote for Matty and securing Bob’s win.

I’m just glad it’s over and we get a fresh start with hopefully better crop of Survivors in 2009.

The ending was anti-climactic, but this was a great Survivor season.
