The Culinary Institute of America Clearly Sucks

Top Chef 5 is here!
Welcome to New York City -
Next time, wear sunscreen.

My impressions of our new chefs after the jump. Join me!

Alex - Not too sure about him quite yet. Seems okay.

Ariane - I want to love our resident Jersey Girl, but she needs to seriously cut it out with the Eeyore crap.

Carla - Crazy.

Danny - Fine now, with the potential for asshole.

Fabio - CIAO!

Gene - Worked his way up from dishwasher and accidentally cooked Padma’s favorite masala. My early fave.

Josea - Couldn’t get too much of a feel for him this episode as I was trying to remember he isn’t Stefan.

Jamie - Would like you to know she’s a lesbian. Seems cool.

Jeff - As soon as I saw his hair, I began hating him and never stopped.

Jill - I honestly don’t remember anything about her.

Lauren - ELIMINATED - Taken out by the Apple Quickfire Challenge. She seemed fun.

Leah - Don’t remember much about her, either, but seemed okay.

Melissa - She talked really loud and I’m not sure about her bangs.

Patrick - ELIMINATED - Wanted him to do well, but he was just too inexperienced. Those noodles were awful. But he’ll be fine.

Radhika - Stayed quiet and out of the way. Looking forward to seeing more of her.

Richard - Our resident Bear. Great attitude. LOVE.

Stefan - Seems to have the capacity for douchebaggery, but at the moment is the favorite to win.

It was so obvious that the kid was out of there, but, as you said, in the long run he will be fine. I tuned in late and so completly missed Jill! Love Gene, but fear he may not have the skills in the long run. The europeans have got to get over themselves - accent does not equal killer chef.

Crazy bug-eyes Carla scares me. Danny and his over-manicured beard are already starting to wear thin. The remaining members of Team Rainbow are very entertaining.

I think Stefan’s douchitude was played up in editing, at least for this episode. I mean… vinaigrette? That’s it? He’s looking Hung-ish at this point: sure of himself, but able to walk the walk. And he’s even more experienced; unless he has some secret flaw, he almost looks like a ringer.

I can’t decide if Gene did the masala lamb on palate and instinct — he did taste something at the market that he wanted to emulate — or by accident. If it’s the former, I think he’ll be okay.

I think your Jill and Lauren pictures are flipped. Gene was way cool. I want to like Radhika but she seems so scared and overwhelmed being there. Leah made the modern Italian dish the judges loved. I think she’ll do well.

Carla’s not going to do all that well but she’s going to be fun to watch. Those crazy glasses and her spirit guides are going to be teh awesome. Especially when she loses her shit over Martha Stewart.

According to the Bravo site, my photos of Jill and Lauren are correct.

Oh, I see what you meant. Their pictures weren’t flipped, but their descriptions were.

Also, Jeff reminds me of Dr Chase. If he starts nailing the hottest woman on the series (Padma, I suppose), then I will start hating him.

I like that picture of Patrick.

I was trying to come up with a haiku for this episode — one line was going to be a European equivalent of “Yankee, go home!” for stefan and fabio, but I’ve failed so far. Also, 4 of the syllables were going to be gooey noodles. I’ll keep working on it.

Patrick, I know, right? I kept excepting Jeff to want to find out what House thinks.

    Chips: Tom = House.

Or maybe Bourdain, but he sadly hasn’t been around much lately, except for that horrible week last season where Dale got kicked off. Hope they don’t hold that against him.
