Superstition

Monday, March 20, 2006 at 08:26am by freakgirl

On this episode we find out about superstition. Horoscopes, lucky surgery caps, being or not being struck by lightning, hot chocolate juju, and people who hate people who say “juju.” A lot of people die on the table this week, but Denny isn’t one of them. Meredith complains about Addison being nice to her, which is RICH. George continues his Meredith-strike, tortures Cristina, and calls Callie “ma’am.” Izzie dumps Alex and kisses Denny. We find out that Webber is a recovering alcoholic, and that Ellis Grey was the problem.

I have to admit that in this episode, I finally liked George. I’m glad he has a spine now. The phone call to Dr Torres was great (”I love watching you set bones, and I don’t normally spend that much time in the women’s bathroom…”) His tackling of Cristina in the bathroom smacked a little of Teri Hatcher on DH though. Too over the top.
What was up with Alex though? I know he was upset and whatever, but he was so hateful to Denny and George, it seemed hormonal. I honestly expected him to keel over and go into spasms after he went off on George. I guess it’s his inner torment? We need more character development on him before I can just accept his freakish anger.

Ack, I was playing video games and half-watching, so I missed how Ellis related to Webber’s alcohol dependency. Anyone wanna help a sister out a little with that plot point?

Not much was said, but – when AA lady asked Webber why he stopped going to meetings, he told her that Ellis was in a nursing home and he was spending his free time visiting with her. AA Lady said that it’s crazy he would be skipping meetings in order to carry on “an emotional affair” with the woman who drove him to drink in the first place.

Ah, thanks FG. While I was half-watching it, at first I thought AA Lady was another ex and that Webber was a bit of a Lothario in his younger days. But I kinda like the way they’re playing this complex tension about the history he shares with Ellis — I keep wondering about the degree to which this has all affected Meredith’s life without her really knowing it.

“The she-shepherd gave me hot chocolate.” HAHA! She-Shepherd.

why didn’t george just punch alex in the face like he did last year when alex roundaboutly gave him the syph? that’s what i would’ve done. alex sucks at life. i like that izzie is standing up for denny, even though i fear a sad day is a-comin’ for those two. [and me. i love denny.]

aw, cristina & burke are so cute. in their own weird detached way.

George was starting to annoy me in this ep as a combination of whiny and wimpy, and then just plain weird when he was all over Christine. That changed however when Alex went balistic on him — that made me feel so bad for the guy that I forgave him for all of his faults. Love the new tension that Alex creates though. Kind of like the Amorosa effect (you don’t like them, but they make for interesting TV so you don’t want them to leave either).

I thought it was better that George just stood there dumbfounded, because that is more how he felt… like why is this ape yelling at me.. oh… oops, I’m a dolt, I should pull up my pants and ask this hot girl out.

Help. Does anyone know the artist who sang the song that played while Izzie kissed Denny near the end of the episode called superstition? I think the name of the song is Hallelujah but I am not sure.

    Many thanks

okay it’s just me who wants denny to die. not because i don’t like him, i do…but izzie can not be a doctor and get this close to patient .it’s agravating me to the point i was rooting for it. i guess i don’t understand how she could become so attached to this paticular patient. i know that after the episode where she convinced the teen mom to give the baby up i stood up and said, ‘no she doesn’t get too involved’. i was wrong. i want her to be crushed by this because she will either rise up and be a great doctor or not. she can’t keep getting involved.

okay but on to lighter things…i loved george and the phone call. it was perfect. i wonder about addison, and hate the fact they’re making me like her.

the aa stuff came out of left field. i like the character development of webber. you get little pieces, and get to make connections.

i agree with whomever said we need to get some back story for alex before i can understand why he’s such an ass. i know he’s got macho shite, like wrestling and liking the guy who shot himself, but that’s not enough to know how or why he went ballistic.

i loved christina at the end when burke said he knew she wanted george gone, and she said not tonight. she grows on me more and more.

and mason, I’m ready for Denny to either die or get a miracle heart and leave. It seems like Izzie never works, just sits there with Denny, and I can’t believe George had an entire day to just follow Cristina around. I have to just try to not think about things like that. :)

I think it’s a testament to the writers and the actress who plays her that we’re starting to warm up to Addison.

All music played on GA can also be found on their official website on ABC. Shonda Rhimes is really into the music so there’s a section on what gets played in each episode.

I’m with you Mason, Denny need to die so Izzy can learn her lesson the hard way.

I loved the washroom scene! Besides being hilarious, it set up that Cristina could kick Bambi’s ass but wouldn’t take that chance with Izzy, and it compounded the whole sibling like rivalry between them over Burke’s affection.

I’m starting to feel bad for Addison, but I still hope they get divorced soon!

Re: Alex’s behavior – I think that he was really frustrated with trying to compete for Izzie’s affections. He watched her get sucked into the drama of Denny – at a time when he thought he might want a relationship with her. I think it was harsh to tell Denny the truth RIGHT before his surgery, maybe he could have said it a little gentler, but Izzie wasn’t doing Denny any favors by influencing him to make decisions based on what she wanted. She wasn’t acting like a doctor should, not separating her feelings from reality. A good surgeon can still have a great bedside manner (trust me, I had one) and stay professional.

I think once Izzie went off on Alex and said that he was nothing and not 1/2 the man Denny was (paraphrasing)…Alex snapped. He went into his defensive, push everyone away, act like a jerk so no one can see his hurt feelings mode. I say that because immediately after that scene, he was snapping at everyone, esp. George. He was back to his old mean, cold, egotistic self that he started the series being, before he got involved with Izzie. That’s my opinion, anyway.

    Other notes:

LOVED the Izzie and Christina showdown. “I will literally kick your ass.” HEE.

Shonda Rimes notes on the episode are great to read too…lots of clues to where the characters might be headed.

The Izzie being WAY too involved with her patients has been addressed before, right? Or am I mixing up my GA memories? When the five babies were born and Addison made Izzy stay with the one they knew wasn’t going to make it becuase that’s what the cheif had done to Addison was she was a newbie? To learn to put distance between herself and her patients, emotional-wise at least?

Loved the phonecall with George and Dr. Torres too… jsut when it seems like they’re going to take him to the point where he may get too whiny, he’s gotta go and do something all cute like that and I can’t but love him even more.

One thing I thing this show is doing really well this season is balancing the storylines between all the characters, and how much we get to see them. It would be easy to get caught up in what grabbed everyone’s attention when the show premiered – the relatinship between Meredith and McDreamy. They’re not overdoing it while still adding in those ‘hey don’t forget, they’re still in love with each other’ moments. I heart this show.

Angie, yeah, we’ve discussed Izzie being over-involved here a few times. I fear it’s leading up to Denny’s death and her having a complete breakdown.

I don’t know if I live on some other planet but I must the only person who cannot stand George. Yes Alex was mean, but he was totally right. I’ve never seen a grown man act that way (George)–we all have embarrassing stuff happen to us, omg get over it. AND WHAT IS WITH THAT HAIR, when is he PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE going to get it fixed???? I totally thought the whole point of that was that he was going to come in one day and have gone to a great stylist and have this great early 90s George Clooney short cut and we’d finally see maybe he’s NOT that heinous. No such like, he’s like Dr. Friar McTuckerson Pageboy freak. Sorry, I can’t stand it and I thought the phone thing was so cheez. The check-out girl from You’ve Got Mail is way too cool for him, it’s an unlikely match.

I heart Denny, but I think someone mentioned he’s going to be full-time the Supernatural Dad so probably is going to bite it. Sad, even if she IS too close to her patients.
