Deterioration of the Fight or Flight Response / Losing My Religion

Again, everyone, I’m a day behind on Grey’s Anatomy. So sorry. But you do fine without me, so discuss away! It will be next to impossible for me not to peek in and see what happened!! Is Burke dead? Denny? Doc the Dog? My stomach hurts!

Wow, that was exhausting. What a rollercoaster. Don’t mean to write a novel, but DAMN.

Meredith and McDreamy – Ahhh, the scene with putting Doc to sleep totally got me. Big tears. Besides the dog dying, which killed me, when Mere said “I’m sorry Doc” and Derek came back with “I’m sorry too” I know they were talking to each other. Patrick Dempsey acts with just his facial expressions in a phenomenal way. Amazing. The scene between Mere and Derek at the prom – you could just tell that they couldn’t help themselves, I loved Derek’s speech about how he couldn’t help looking at her like that. I do feel awful for Finn, he’s so caught in the middle.

Sandra Oh is amazing. They stayed so true to character with Christina. Of course she couldn’t bring herself to be more human in front of Burke. She couldn’t handle so much baring of emotions. If she had been there for Burke all the way, I don’t think that would have been true to the character. With the confessions to the chief and then seeing Izzie with Denny, I think that she decided then to put aside all of her issues and be with her love, who was still alive.

The scene with Derek waking up Burke during surgery was VERY hard to watch, but well done. I just had flashbacks to my own surgery. [shiver]

I loved the interviews with the chief, and how they all talked about their various personal issues and not the Denny case.

    I love George. LOVE.

Bailey was amazing. She went to “Where are my suck-ups!” from a completely emotional scene with Burke, back to “speaking teenage girl.” She’s a great character.

Izzie – When Alex pulled her off the bed, [sob] my heart just broke. I think Alex learned a lot in these episodes, he might just redeem himself. I loved that all of the interns were in there, and all through the episode, working together and being a team…they really are a family. I love that no one told the chief until the very end who cut the wire. Guess Izzie is really leaving the program. Maybe she still be a doctor of some kind, so she can stay in the hospital?

    Wonderful episode.

I thought it was equally wonderful and horrific. It was like watching science fiction. What was going on had bore so little relation to what migt actually happen in a hospital.

    - Intern deliberately atttempting murder, hoping someone will save the patient before her actually dies because she’s in love? Can anyone say pyschotic?

    - An entire team of interns steal a conspire to steal a heart and participate in an attmepted murder and are punished by organizing a prom? How about sent home until the police can decide which charges to press and the other heart patient’s family can sue the pants off of each and every one of them?

    - A prom in a hospital to please a patient and the petulant demand of the Chief’s wife? Hi, lady, I’m not sure if you noticed, but your husband runs a hospital, not a youth social club.

    - Burke starts fighting the intubation and the surgeon leans over the open wound to physically restrain the man himself? Where were the billion assistants? Do you think his leaning on the open wound is what futzed up the nerves in the hand?

    - All the surgery staff, including interns, attend the prom in full regalia? because, I guess in Seattle, people only get hurt or experience physical trauma during the day.

    - So, what the heck happened to the brain dead pregnant girl? Not a sexy enough story for the season closer? Not when you can have interns having sex with married attendings in empty exam rooms, or attempt to kill the patient you’ve claimed to have fallen in love with, or hide from you live in boyfriend, who you’ve told you love, rather than give him support after he was shot.

The writers got me emotionally, and I’m as hooked to Grey’s as my mother was to Y&R at my age, but holy moly they want you to really suspend your belief in reality for this show.

  3. 3.   luvgrey said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 11:55 am )

I totally agree with your observations mamaloo. But, for me, Grey’s is one show that I prefer to just hold on and enjoy the ride.

When Denny nodded out I was yelling … where’s the staff? isn’t there an alarm?

And, I thought Addison looked absolutely beautiful while Meredith looked like her usual rumpled self. I wished she had put her hair up, but I guess that wouldn’t be in character for her.

I did like that McDreamy was the one shouting “what does this mean” “what does this mean”

I saw the deleted scene on Good Morning America today. It was a scene with the vet and Meredith. They were at his apartment talking about what to do with the dog. As is Grey’s style, the conversation came around to what Meredith was going to decide to do about McDremey…all with inferences and talk about the dog. Seeing the scene made the last scene much more powerful.

Alex with Izzie at the end? SO touching.

Mer and Der? That was so great, and man was I jealous! I’d like to order a McDreamy makeout session.. STAT.

George/Callie: They have certainly switched roles now haven’t they.. she was so aggressive to start and now she’s the one who’s unsure. I hope she stays around next season.

Doc? I had to change the channel while he was being put down… too many memories of putting down our family dog. Well done tho.

I thought this was a great season finale…I liked how each of the iterns session with the chief turned into a therapy session and had nothing to do with denny…i was also glad to see christina go to burke when he needed her, i think meredith should pick mcdreamy there’s no heat with the vet even tho he’s a really great guy…life’s too short to not have the passion, as denny has shown! can’t wait til next season!!!

The “love” scene between Meredith and mcdreamey was HOT! It just goes to show you less is more! Holy Moly!

  8. 8.   Chris said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 2:37 pm )

yea your right it was really hot…i think they should just get together already…like adison said, “the only people that don’t know that derek loves meredith, is derek and meredith!”

I’m late to this party (I only started watching in December), so I hesitated to gripe about authenticity. I didn’t know it if was just the tone of the show and I’d been missing it. Like mamaloo, I was frustrated by the way Izzie’s actions were handled. Everyone saying they did it so that no one could be blamed? That doesn’t even work in primary school, guys. They’d all have been booted because there would be a LONG LIST of people clamoring to replace them. And everyone putting on formal attire and going to a prom? Stupid. SO, why did I still LOVE IT SO MUCH? It’s soapy goodness. T.R. Knight was phenomenal. Most of this cast rocks. Each episode whipsaws from humor to pathos and back. I don’t even give two shits about McDreamy. Gimme the vet.

  10. 10.   Michael said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 3:25 pm )

I just hope it doesn’t veer into “Ally McBeal” territory. Or “Boston Legal” territory.

So, I hope she picks McDreamy and then frees up Addison to get someone hot. Either the dude she cheated with, the vet, or Alex (an ass can still be hot).

  11. 11.   sar said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 6:09 pm )

Mamaloo, the problem I’ve had with Grey’s from the start [and it isn't really a PROBLEM, per se] is that I adore the side stories as much as the main plotlines. I always wonder what happened to That One Dude From Last Week or Chick Who Freaked Out Last Season. kudos to the extras, i s’pose.

i don’t do well with animal deaths, y’all.

michael, you went from being my favorite to being fired from my life when you said you don’t care about mcdreamy. PSHAW!

  12. 12.   highbrow said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 6:42 pm )

as someone who never totally blamed mer for what happened to george, i’m glad the writers wrote in the scene where george appologizes to meredith. if nothing else, it showed that george, despite being sweet and awkward, is an adult and responsible for his own actions.

interviews with the chief were awesome! cristina showing her vulnerable side, alex showing he does care about this work family, meredith nailing the chief’s ass to the wall and george’s “you’re not going to break me. i’m starting to get a little freaked out, but you’re not going to break me.”

soosan, i too know it feels to make that decision about your dog. i was crying uncontrollably…

  13. 13.   chris said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 6:52 pm )

highbrow – i totally agree with you about the george thing…while it wasn’t completely his fault it was nice to hear him step up and deal with the situation instead of avoiding it all the time

  14. 14.   Emilie said  ( Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 7:45 pm )

OK, I have to pitch in on this, b/c Chuck was reading the posts to me, and I made him stop and listen to me so I could tell him what happened. And then I promptly burst into tears, which amused him to no end.

I’m mildly obsessed with this show. I have a compulsion with my TiVo remote to replay the small endearing or amusing moments (lots of good body language on this show) to make the episode last longer. Is this weird?

This particular episode wrecked me. It started when Doc (or is it Dog? I can’t ever understand what they’re saying) was put to sleep. Which I thought was way underplayed. OK, I know you’re doctors and you see death and destruction all the time, but dogs are nicer than most people, and if my dog had died that day, there’s no way I would be attending the hospital prom. At least I wouldn’t be happy when I got there.

As much as I love the thought of Meredith & Derek together (a la Carrie & Big), I can’t help but think back to Moonlighting. The sexual tension is what makes it good. Once they get together, they can’t stay together and be happy, b/c that does not make for good TV. And if they’re not happy, they’re usually whining or fighing about something stupid, and then you just get tired of watching them. I would be more a fan of she and the vet if I didn’t find Chris O’Donnell so annoying from his previous movies. Though he is considerably more appealing on this show.

Izzie & Denny. I haven’t been quite sure what to make of that whole thing. They set her up as getting too attached to patients with the whole quintuplets episode, so I have reconciled myself to this being in keeping with her character. But I just kept thinking, she’s this tough trailer park girl who has beat the odds and became a surgeon, and now she’s putting EVERYTHING on the line for this guy, who ultimately could end up being the redneck husband who pinches her ass all the time. She knew nothing about him. And I also kept thinking, I can’t get away with half the sass at my non-corporate job that she gets away with as a surgical intern no less, so I generally was having a hard time achieving suspension of disbelief. When her relentlessness gave way into sheer madness, it made me sooo uncomfortable. I couldn’t decide if it was too horrifying to think about having to make a decision like that, or I didn’t believe it. However, the last scene, when Alex pried her away from Denny’s body, picked her up out of the hospital bed in her prom dress, and let her sob on his lap, this officially did me in. Thank god she fessed up, b/c I could not handle the improbability of a group surgical interns all taking responsibility for essentially stealing a heart and then having them get away with it. I mean c’mon….

LOVE Dr. Bailey, I think she might actually be my favorite. I could eat George with a spoon. And his girlfriend could break him over her knee. I’m sooooo glad his whining about Meredith is done, and he took some responsibility, that was getting pretty tired. Christina usually slays me, but she was a little too yellow in this episode, even for her. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but POOR ADDISON! Is there anything worse than when you know the person you love, loves someone else? My stomach wrenched for her. I wouldn’t be able to take it. I would make him confess!

Between this and the bomb episode, they’ve had some real nail biters. Love it!!!

Emilie, agree with every damn word you said.

Also, you said: “I have a compulsion with my TiVo remote to replay the small endearing or amusing moments (lots of good body language on this show) to make the episode last longer. Is this weird?”

We had to stop and re-watch the part where George yells at Callie and she starts stomping towards him, and for a split second there, he starts to run.

    Emilie,
    Word.

sar, first to worst, eh? I think McDreamy is hot as hell, but I don’t like in him what I don’t like in me: he does what he thinks is expected instead of what he wants.

Plus, I want Chris O’Donnell to stick around. He’s looking good and it’s refreshing to see him in something that’s not crap.

  17. 17.   Michael said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 7:42 am )

Plus there’s the whole “cheats on his wife and doesn’t tell the woman he’s cheating with that he’s married then gets back together with his wife after that woman falls in love with him then keeps reassuring his wife that nothing is going on with the other woman and then is dropping the other woman’s panties in an empty hospital room while he’s at the prom with his wife” thing.

I can see Izzie walking away from it all–she’s debt-free, has a strong perfectionist streak, no distance, is very emotional, has no family ties and is just worn out. It would be best for her.

Sara Ramirez is apparently hated by the costuming department–that was the world’s worst dress for her!

I also love the subtle acting on this show.

The scenes that made me choke up were:

1)Cristina asking the Chief how he handles it, and him saying “I’m not going to help you become less human” or something like that. Whoo.

    2) The Chief’s niece telling him that at least she ahd been loved. Yowza.

The Mer/Der scenes made me cringe, and I’m going back to my dislike for Meredith. Addison deserves better than being treated like that by her hubby. She better get someone better next season.

And, OMG, Alex holding Izzie – that was such a sweet moment. Same for Cristina and Burke in the end.

  22. 22.   freakgirl said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 2:20 pm )

e, I agree, but why would you dislike Meredith when it’s Derek who’s cheating on his wife? I was really let down by that scene…I feel like Derek and Addison have come so far and everyone was doing their best to act civilized. I mean, fine, you want to be with Meredith, then fricking cut Addison loose. Ugh, I hope Addison kicks the shit out of him.

The casting of Patrick Dempsey is almost too good, because I love him. I hate him. I love him. I hate him. I LOVE HIM! ARRRRGGGGH.

  23. 23.   maddie said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 2:25 pm )

I think Addison DOES deserve someone who will treat her well, but SHE is the one that came back for Derek, and SHE is the one that stayed even though it is CLEAR that he loves someone else, and SHE is the one who will not commit to someone who WANTS her for a change. She is letting herself be made a fool of by Derek – since everyone knew as soon as she got to the hospital that he loved someone else. I hope she finally leaves Derek and goes to McSteamy next season.

I agree, when Alex picked up Izzie and let her cry in his arms, I was crying like a baby. Such a great moment.

  24. 24.   Soosan said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 2:34 pm )

    Crying like a baby:

    -putting doc down

  25. 25.   Emilie said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 2:43 pm )

I forgot about the scene between Christina and the chief, that really got me too. I think the reason that I forgot about it is b/c I wanted to choke Izzie when she started her “I’m the pretty girl speech” You stole a heart, and nearly killed your boyfriend, you’re essentially being interviewed about keeping your job and you choose to explain that you love Denny b/c he doesn’t treat you like a piece of ass? And truthfully, ya ain’t that pretty. Don’t worry, Izzie has my full sympathy after the end result, but that scene drove me nuts.

As much as I hate it for Addison, I also want to shake her. How ultra humiliating is it to stay with someone when she clearly knows he loves someone else. Have some self respect!! You blew it. You tried to work it out. Move on, and you will be OK. I mean she has to know that if he ever is going to be able to give it a shot with her, he has to get Meredith out of his system first.

  26. 26.   luvgrey said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 2:43 pm )

I know what you mean about Patrick Dempsey’s “McDreamy”…I wonder if he realizes he’s a love him/hate him kind of guy.

I want Addison to stand up for herself next season. Enough is enough. I want her to declare her independence and move into a decent dwelling and he can come with her or not. What the hell is a top notch surgeon doing living in a tiny trailer to appease a cheating husband?

The whole Mer-Der thing has frustrated me since I found out he was married/separated. And I don’t dislkie Meredith for that per se – she just annoys me. But it could be the actress more than the character. . . I don’t know.

On another note – did any of y’all recognize that one of the niece’s friends was Tom Hanks’ aunt in “You’ve Got Mail”?

That’s right! That was the same actress.

  31. 31.   freakgirl said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 3:22 pm )

    It’s the same girl, luvgrey.

I recognized her but couldn’t figure out from where. The geekboy looked it up for me.

I’m surprised to read the stuff about Addison. As much as I despised her character in the beginning, I have come to really root for her. I feel like she’s a woman who did something terrible because her marriage was unsatisfying. Then she realized her mistake and decided to try to save the marriage. Her husband AGREED and got on board. When trust has been broken to the extent it was in their marriage, the only thing you have left is faith in each other. Addison is IN IT. She can’t look objectively at anything. There’s no possible way that she could see that Derek still loves Meredith. She has her suspicions, but all she has going for her is faith in Derek’s and Meredith’s words.

She really only figured things out during the season finale. Obviously now it will all be out in the open at some point next season, and THEN I hope she walks away. But I don’t blame her for trying to fix things.

I had no idea I cared this much. God. Anyway, I heard that McSteamy may be coming back next season, so Addison, you go get yours!

She played an old college friend of Ross/Chandler and they had made a pact with each nother not to date her, but during a reunion Ross found out her and Chandler used to makeout all the time. (Same episode were Ross realized he had mistankingly made out with his sister at a party thinking she was Rachel… ewie EW!)

Freakgirl, you are completely right about Addison. I tend toward “do as I say, not as i do” re: bad relationships. I always get all women’s lib about “stand up for yourself” & “have some self respect”, clearly forgetting the times I have hung in there with a boy who clearly was not into me, but I kept hoping he would come around. That is until I met my wonderful husband:) I think because I remember that feeling, I just want her to pull herself out of this and move on. I really like her now too!!

And yes, I do realize that I am talking about these people like I know them, rather than fictional television characters. But if you think this is bad, you should have heard me when Six Feet Under was on…

  35. 35.   freakgirl said  ( Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 4:42 pm )

You’re totally right about wanting to pull her out because you remember how it feels. Me too. It’s really hard to watch someone do that, on tv or in real-life, because YOU know that everything will be okay if they leave. But THEY don’t know that and it requires patience for you to not slap them silly, right?

Ack, Em, if you were anywhere near the state I was in during the SFU finale…I was wrecked for days.

Note to self: Step away from television and make some real friends.

Addison is staying for all of next season (yay!).

Rhimes: Addison is here to stay. Addison is here to stay because I love Kate Walsh, and I feel like she brings something to the show in a way that was completely unexpected. We started out saying five or six episodes, and then I just kept on writing for her. She’s too amazing. She’s part of the family now.

And Michael, Chuck reads FG to me all the time. I’m surprised that he doesn’t do voices, he’s quite good at the imitations. Everyone he hasn’t met in person should send him audio files, he’ll have your voice down in no time.
