What a Freaking Cliffhanger!

Ben and Jacob

In the opening scene, we finally meet Jacob. He’s spinning yarn (on an Ashford Traditional) and weaving a tapestry of some sort on a standing frame loom. Then he goes outside, catches himself some fish and sits down on the beach to cook it and watch an incoming ship, presumably the Black Rock. It must be the 1800s. While Jacob is eating his breakfast, a man greets him and sits down. He accuses Jacob of “bringing” the Black Rock, otherwise there would have been no way for them to find the island. The man is quietly angry and says outsiders only bring corruption and destruction to the island, that it always ends the same. Jacob says it only ends once, and anything before that “is just progress.” The man faces Jacob and announces he very badly wants to kill him, and that one day, sooner or later, he will find a loophole that enables him to do so. Jacob is unimpressed. The camera pans back and we see that the entire exchange occured beneath the Egyptian statue.

Sayid

This week we learn a little bit of Sayid’s past. As a child, his older brother had a hard time slaughtering chickens for the family so Sayid would do it, to save his brother some pain. Their father didn’t see it that way, and praised Sayid for being a man and belittled his brother terribly.

Class of ‘77

Namaste!

This episode takes us back to the Ajira flight, where the co-pilot is tempting fate by talking about how Hurley must have nerves of steel, being one of the Oceanic 6 and getting on a flight to the South Pacific yet again, when “lightning” DOES strike twice and the flash of light snatches some of our passengers right out of time. The plane crashes, leaving Frank slightly injured but the poor co-pilot gets the Wash treatment. As we know, Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid end up in 1977 while Sun, Frank, Ben and John (as well as the rest of the passengers and crew) remain in the present, which is 3 years after they left the island the first time. Got it? Good.
