United States of Tara premieres on Showtime on January 18th. We were able to preview the first four episodes, which was exciting for me, as I’ve been anticipating this show for a quite a while. Toni Collette is one of my favorite actresses, John Corbett is one of the most reassuring men on television, and Diablo Cody (who is also a producer) wrote the first few episodes. Yes, please!

I’m glad to report the show lived up to my expectations. The premise — Tara has Dissociative Identity Disorder and has gone off her meds under a therapist’s supervision — allows Toni to show off her acting chops, and the writing deals with mental illness in a warm and sympathetic manner. The humor is at times sweet and dark, just like our other favorite, Weeds.

This was a fun episode. The chefs pulled together when they really needed to, Colicchio ripped them all new assholes anyway, the chefs received a Christmas surprise, and did I mention the glimpse of Cheyenne Jackson?
